چکیده
Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are randomized search strategies which have turned out to be efficient for optimization problems of quite different kind. In order to understand the behavior of EAs, one also is interested in examples where EAs need exponential time to find an optimal solution. Until now only artificial examples of this kind were known. Here an example with a clear and simple structure is presented. It can be described by a short formula, it is a polynomial of degree 3, and it is an instance of a wellknown problem, the theoretically and practically important MAXSAT problem.

Design and Management of Complex Technical Processes and Systems by means of Computational Intelligence Methods On the Design and Analysis of Evolutionary Algorithms
Evolutionary algorithms are problem-independent randomized search heuristics. It is discussed when it is useful to work with such algorithms and it is argued why these search heuristics should be analyzed just as all other deterministic and randomized algorithms. Such an approach is started by analyzing a simple evolutionary algorithm on linear functions, quadratic functions, unimodal functions...
متن کاملDesign and Management of Complex Technical Processes and Systems by means of Computational Intelligence Methods Dynamic Parameter Control in Simple Evolutionary Algorithms
Evolutionary algorithms are general, randomized search heuristics that are influenced by many parameters. Though evolutionary algorithms are assumed to be robust, it is well-known that choosing the parameters appropriately is crucial for success and efficiency of the search. It has been shown in many experiments, that non-static parameter settings can be by far superior to static ones but theor...

We present a natural fitness function f for the multiobjective shortest path problem, which is a fundamental multiobjective combinatorial optimization problem known to be NP-hard. Thereafter, we conduct a rigorous runtime analysis of a simple evolutionary algorithm (EA) optimizing f . Interestingly, this simple general algorithm is a fully polynomial-time randomized approximation scheme (FPRAS)...

It has been shown that simple evolutionary algorithms are able to solve the minimum cut problem in expected polynomial time when using a multi-objective model of the problem. In this paper, we generalize these ideas to the NP-hard minimum multicut problem. Given a set of k terminal pairs, we prove that evolutionary algorithms in combination with a multi-objective model of the problem are able t...
